Hello sweet peas!! 🙂
So recently the topic of “what to do when you leave school” has been appearing more and more in my life since I turned sixteen. Honestly, I can’t go to a family event without someone asking “so what are you going to do when you leave school?”, which quickly turns into “which university are you going to?”. However, unlike most people I generally don’t have a one sentence answer for them. More like an essay long answer.
In New Zealand there are around 6 or 7 tertiary institutes, including both universities and polytechnic institutes. I think Victoria University in Wellington (our capital) looks awesome, and a great place to be a student. But when it comes to actually thinking of what I want to do when I leave school… well the words “travel the world” seem to fall out of my mouth.
I want to see the great lights of Times Square, and the hills of Wales, the ancient wonders of Egypt, and the deep forests of Germany. Unfortunately travelling is something people generally consider a viable option.
So, my question for you all is what you are planning to do, or what you did, or even are doing, beyond school education? And if anyone can give me some advice about possible ways of travelling when I do leave school (still dreading it haha) 😀 As always, I love hearing all your thoughts 🙂
I hope you’re all having a great day!! 🙂

After I graduate Oregon State University I plan to backpack and teach English in other countries for 1-2 years before I come back and focus on getting a career/house/family haha. Being a student and graduating with debt isn’t as scary as most people think. It’s a normal bill you pay like a car loan or mortgage so with that said traveling can be realistic if you budget and even try to work while you are there! Hope this helps 😊

thank you so much! and that sounds so cool! 🙂 I think it’d be so cool to go teach English to people – also an amazing way to meet new people 🙂 and thank you for the advice, it most certainly has helped 🙂 ❤

It’s hard decision that most people have to make. I didn’t go to uni, I went out working straight from school but I did go to Polytech as an adult student once I turned 27.. I think it was good in a way because I noticed the kids who came straight from school didn’t really apply themselves as much and a lot of them ended up dropping out – it was almost like they didn’t know what they wanted to do.
I think if you have a clear idea of what you would want to study at uni then go for it – travel will always be there. But if have questions about what to study, then maybe some time off seeing the world might be just what you need to do to know exactly what you want in life…
Or I could be completely wrong haha.. .good luck!

omg thank you so much! this makes total sense to me haha 😀 I have a family member who did that too, and said that he was way ahead of the straight from school people because they hadn’t settled down and become serious yet 🙂 thank you so much for the advice! 🙂 ❤

Hi Lui!
I think you should go to college. Going to college and getting (at least) a BA will certainly open a lot of doors in your life. You could get some sort of degree that send you to world-wide destinations. I’d definatly go through the 4 years. It will be worth it, I’m sure.

It was so hard for me what I wanted to do after school. I had to choose a study, because everyone does that here, so I had too. I choose the study ‘business economics’, a really hard but fun study. I’m in my first year now and sometimes I think about chosing another study. But it’s so hard because there are a LOT of studies here, and I don’t like any other than ‘business economics’. Good luck with your study-picking or world-travelling-plans!

Traveling after getting out of school is so ideal. I still (after graduating from college almost 6 years from now) still want to travel everywhere. That want never ends. After I graduated, I received my first teaching job (I went to school to be a teacher) I actually landed my job right before I graduated so that was really lucky. Taught for 4 years, decided it wasn’t for me, moved to the city and found myself working at an IT company which I love! Can’t wait to see where life brings you after school 🙂

oh man to be honest I have no idea lol between teaching and my IT job, I was working for real estate (which I didn’t want to but had to just for commute reasons when I moved into the city) so while I was working for the Real Estate agency, I was applying to jobs like crazy and I just ended up getting a call back from the company I’m working at now and its been great ever since! Certainly things like this make me believe that everything does in fact fall into place- just as it will for you 🙂

Well I was thinking of doing a bilingual college, basically I would live in London for one year (I still have time it’s only in 2 years.) And for everything after that I haven’t completely decided yet. But as I’m studying physics I think I want to go in that direction. And obviously photography. 😉❤️ xx

I am still not at that stage yet, but what I would suggest is that you should follow your heart and your dreams. Everyone has passions and you should truly reach deep down and understand what you want. Hope it helps, although this kind of advice tends to be slightly confusing! 🙂
